The Dictionary of Literary Biography is definitely an essential reference source for students and readers of literature.

The Gale Research Company began publishing this ongoing series in 1978, and the Library currently has 297 volumes in the Reference Collection. This main series is supplemented by an annual yearbook (REF PS 21 D522 1980-). as well as a documentary series (REF PS 21 D53 v.1-19) which was published from 1982 to 1999.

Each volume is devoted to authors from a particular literary genre, geographic area or time period. Each author essay begins with a bibliography of the author’s works, followed by a substantial biographical and critical essay, and a bibliography of the primary and secondary sources consulted. The scope encompasses literature from North America, Britain, the Commonwealth, modern Europe, Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean. Authors include novelists, dramatists, poets, essayists, critics, historians, journalists, publishers, screen writers, scholars and biographers. An index to the complete set is provided in the back of the most current volume.
