Each volume is devoted to authors from a particular literary genre, geographic area or time period. Each author essay begins with a bibliography of the authors works, followed by a substantial biographical and critical essay, and a bibliography of the primary and secondary sources consulted. The scope encompasses literature from North America, Britain, the Commonwealth, modern Europe, Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean.
