Information for users of Write-N-Cite for Mac

writencite.png

Mac users who have had difficulty installing Write-N-Cite should try using Safari to download the software. Firefox can cause an incorrect file type to be downloaded, which may freeze Stuffit Expander and prevent it from being installed.

Write-N-Cite, available for both Mac and Windows-based PCs, is used with Microsoft Word to create in-text citations in conjunction with your RefWorks bibliography. Further information is available via the Library's RefWorks page.

"Reopen the EPA Libraries!"

That the Administration of George W. Bush has been hostile to science has become well-known, especially environmental and climate change science. For instance, the Bush Adminstration imposed draconian budget cuts on the Environmental Protection Agency, which resulted in the EPA closing their libraries.

Now with the Democrats poised to take charge of Congress and the Senate in January, there are hopes that the libraries will reopen. Kelpie Wilson on Truthout puts it this way:

"Closing the EPA libraries is the perfect symbol to characterize the methods of the Bush administration...But that era is now winding down.

Just before the election, Barbara Boxer and other senators sent a letter to the Senate Appropriations Committee calling for restored access to the libraries. There is every reason to hope that the Democrats will follow through with their newly won power and get those libraries reopened. But this will be just the beginning of a Herculean task to clean the muck out of the stables and restore an environmental regulatory function to government.

...The common thread through all of these environmental issues is the need to understand and follow the science. That requires two things: good information and good people... Without access to information, reason cannot operate. Let there be libraries!"

Privacy warning for user profiles and other data stored on U.S. servers

The CBC News Service issued a reminder last week that the U.S. Patriot Act allows government officials there to examine data-stores as part of routine surveillance. “Conceivably, the searches of a student or faculty member doing work on a sensitive issue could be flagged and then stored in the U.S.” (CBC News Service, October 31, 2006. Full story at CBC [currently unavailable] or our cache).

The story cited as an example of a vulnerable database hosted in the U.S. the well-known bibliographic management system RefWorks. Although the site itself has a comprehensive Data Security and Privacy policy, we would like to warn our patrons that their data could be subject to searches at any time.
