Book Review: Harmony

Michael Dudley reviews the Prince of Wales' new book, Harmony, in the Winnipeg Free Press:

"According to the prince, our civilization's woes can be traced to the ideological dominance of modernism and scientific rationalism. In promoting a thoroughly mechanistic view of humanity and the world and demystifying nature, these beliefs led us to consider all plants, animals and minerals as mere economic commodities.

To demonstrate such harmony in action, Prince Charles and his co-authors describe how people everywhere are working at the margins to restore this lost balance. Through a return to traditional agricultural practices, dramatic reductions in consumption, technological innovations, a resurgent civil society and holistic economic approaches, individuals and organizations are showing how ecological harmony can promote a high quality of life.

Not incidentally, many of these innovations are those undertaken by the prince himself. Between his Foundation for the Built Environment, the Foundation for Integrated Health, the Accounting for Sustainability project, the School of Traditional Arts, various sustainable agriculture efforts and his Start campaign to promote more sustainable consumer choices, Prince Charles has achieved results few elected officials can match."

Disastio on Signs

The recent controversy over a large illuminated sign on a building in Winnipeg's downtown led IUS Director Jino Distasio to comment in the Winnipeg Free Press that, while the installation of such signs must follow permitting rules we do need to consider that most of the world's famous cities -- Manhattan, Tokyo, Las Vegas -- are awash in neon eye candy. Perhaps it's time, he writes, for Winnipeg to follow suit:

"we must...recognize the need for downtowns to be a bit brash and bold. We need the neon, the lights and the action to create an identity."

"To those Winnipeggers who are up in arms over the recent wave of bikeway construction; who are infuriated over the loss of parking spaces and car lanes, or just annoyed at the scale of public dollars being spent on the needs of what you might think of as a vocal minority... I have someone you need to listen to.

His name is Jan Gehl, a renowned Copenhagen-based architect who has spent decades working to make cities in Europe, Australia and the U.S. more people-friendly. He has just come out with a book called Cities for People."

He writes:

"The proposed redevelopment of the abandoned industrial lands in Fort Rouge is perhaps the best example of how Winnipeg should be revitalizing older neighbourhoods. Rarely are we presented with such a great opportunity to not only convert an empty wasteland but to also support and strengthen existing services...Lord Roberts has a great opportunity to ensure future generations will remain proud "Terriers" in a community that is so closely tied to its history and preservation. In the end, being bold and innovative, much like how Austin was in helping to open up the area is so fitting for adopting this new step forward."

"Empires is an engagingly written history with an urgent message about the fragile unsustainability of our agriculture. According to the authors, it is only through the massive use of artificial fertilizers, manufactured with finite supplies of natural gas, that we have managed to increase our numbers past six billion people. Peaking fossil fuel supplies, combined with our abuse and destruction of topsoil, climate change and the depletion of aquifers mean that, sooner than we think, the global larder will be empty -- with all that implies for our ability to maintain current population levels."
