MITACS INTERNSHIP RESEARCH PROJECTS

MITACS

HEREBY SOLICITS PROPOSALS FOR

INTERNSHIP RESEARCH PROJECTS

The MITACS Internship Program is designed to facilitate research projects involving graduate students or post-doctoral fellows, their academic supervisors and a participating non-academic partner. Partners can include companies, hospitals, financial institutions, hospitals, government labs and agencies and not-for-profit societies.

The internship program provides research funds for faculty members and enables their graduate student or PDF under their supervision to undertake research jointly with a partner organization. The focus is on applying mathematical sciences techniques to research problems of interest to all participants. The aim is to expand joint industry/academia partnerships, to provide a novel training experience for students, and to foster new research projects resulting from the internship research.

Each internship project receives $15,000 in funding with the funds being provided equally by MITACS and the non-academic partner with the funds awarded to the academic supervisor as a research grant. MITACS recommends that $10,000 be used to support the graduate student or PDF with any remaining funds used to support research activities related to the project. There is some flexibility to tie together a number of internships thereby forming a larger project and it may be possible to apply for federal grants based on the internship project.

MITACS can assist with the preparation of the project proposal as well as helping to secure a non-academic partner where required. Full guidelines and the proposal submission template are available on the MITACS website at: www.mitacs.ca/goto/internships.

For more information about this program or to obtain help in preparing a submission, please contact Karen Booth at kbooth@mitacs.ca.

Proposals should be received no later than February 15, 2006 for projects intending to start by May 1, 2006.

Interactive information session on the Composite Learning Index

Canadian Council on Learning (CCL)

Interactive Information Session on the Composite Learning Index - January 18, 2006

Learning is key to our success as a country, yet it has not been the focus of national attention in recent years. CCL is developing a Composite Learning Index (CLI) to measure the state of learning in Canada.

The CLI will provide a regular “snapshot” of the state of learning in Canada using an innovative approach that is both accessible and informative. CCL is hosting an interactive information session on January 18, 2006, to present the framework of the CLI. Invitations (.doc) are being sent to key stakeholders in the field of learning throughout Canada. The actual index will be released in spring 2006.

CCL is inviting key stakeholders in the field of learning to participate in an interactive information session on the Composite Learning Index, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., on January 18, 2006, at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa.

"During this session, we will present the framework for the index," says Marc Lachance, Associate Director, Monitoring and Reporting at CCL, who is responsible for designing Canada’s first-ever composite learning index. "We hope that it will spark a vigorous dialogue on the state of learning in Canada."

For those interested but unable to attend in person, a dial-in option is being offered for the presentation portion of the information session.

If you wish to participate, please complete the registration form available on CCL’s website and return it by email to composite.index@ccl-cca.ca or by fax to (613) 782-2956 by January 11, 2006. Please clearly indicate whether you intend to attend in person or by phone. For more information about the event, contact Sheena Powell at (613) 786-3230, ext. 217.
