Sun, Jan.29 Shift

Shift went well but was busy. Had a tech problem accessing a journal which I sent to libsystems to follow-up. Played around with adding categories to blog posts. Figured out Sage instructions, but need to figure out how to edit Import instructions in the staff-only. Still left to do was Britannica news entry, but Lina had already started that so I will leave it to her to finish up next week.

Problem accessing Behavior Genetics Vol.23

I had a patron today trying to access vol.23 of Behavior Genetics. Using the Journal Title Search we got these results. But when we both tried accessing it by selecting the second provider on the list " Springer - MetaPress: fulltext 1972-03-01 (v.2) - 1994-05-01 (v.24) " we got to the Springer journal homepage which only allowed access back to vol.27.

There are two entries for Springer on the results page covering different volumes of Behavior Genetics, but I think they are both pointing to same page which is only allowing access from vol.27.

I e-mailed libsystems with the problem and provided them with the patron's e-mail and asked them if they could let me know what's going on with our access to vol.23 of Behavior Genetics by the end of the week. They can either get back to the patron themselves or I can.

Another Blog Idea

Just to share that I've been using a RSS reader to make sure I get any new posts to our blog. The posts are delivered to my reader so I don't have to check the actual blog.

Lina I don't know if you've done this before (forgive me if you're already an RSS expert), but you might like it. I've been using NetNewsWire for Mac, but are other RSS readers, just google RSS reader and mac or something. Here's a link explaining RSS and such.. http://www.sixapart.com/about/feeds

Categories for Blog Posts

Hi all,

In Moveable Type I have created some Categories for our blog. We can delete/edit these as necessary, but I thought it might be handy to find old posts more easily. You can create categories you think would be useful by doing (left hand sidebar -> Categories -> New Top Level Category). If you click the category's name from the list you can add descriptions/edit the name to provide more detail.

Once you're writing your post you can assign categories by using the "Primary Category" drop-down menu. You can also click the "Assign Multiple Categories" link right below that drop-down menu.

From the public view of the blog you can see a section on the right "Categories" and the one's we've created underneath. Click on the name of the category to bring up all posts that have that category assigned to it.

This is an experiment, so I guess we can see if this catches on or not.. I predict the Question for CJ category will quite popular.. haha!

Q for CJ.. How to Edit Sage Import Instructions

Hey CJ and Lina,

I figured out the SAGE procedure from export/import into RefWorks. I can see how to edit the "export" part of what the public sees (Staff-Only -> Vendor Help -> Sage), and have edited accordingly. I can't figure out though how to edit the "Importing into RefWorks" section for SAGE. The import instructions are different than normal because SAGE is weird. The import filter in the instructions is not "SAGE" but should be "Refer Format". Full instructions are below.

CJ if you can add a comment telling me how to edit the import instructions for SAGE in the staff-only that would be good and I finish the entry off next Sunday. The entry is "inactive" for now since the current import instructions that show aren't right.

___

Exporting citations into RefWorks from Sage Journals Online is not automatic. First follow the Exporting instructions below, and then follow the "Importing into Refworks" instructions.

1. Search and find the information you would like to import.
2. Mark the articles your wish to export.
3. Next to "For checked items on this page:" Select "download to citation manager" and push the "Go" button
4. Click on "download to citation manager" link.
5. Click on "EndNote". Open the file, or save and open the file. Select all the text (CTRL A) and copy (CTRL C)

Importing into Refworks

1. Sign into RefWorks
2. Scroll your mouse over References on the far left in the menu at the top of the page.
3. From the drop-down menu, click on Import.
4. Select Import Filter/Data Source Refer Format
5. Choose End
6. Choose a folder to import references into. (Specify a folder or it will default to the Last Imported Folder.)
7. Choose: Import Data from the following Text.
8. Paste (CTRL V)
9. Import button

Commenting Enabled.

I have changed some settings and it should be possible for you to publish comments instantly. Of course, you can also create new entries in MovableType to make your end of shift comments. If you need additional info about MovableType, please let me know (although I believe you can log in and all that).

Thanks for the feedback.

RefWorks Instructions for Sage Journals Online

Hi, we have a new database called Sage Journals Online. I'll need one of you to do up some instructions on how to use this one with RefWorks. From the Staff-Only page, under Databases, there is a link to Vendor Help (RefWorks). This is where you can add the help part for RefWorks. You'll have to Add Vendor Help and select Sage under vendor. That should link it up to Sage Journals Online. Have a look at the other databases' information pages for examples.

Please leave comments on progress.

Thanks. ~CJ

Review of New Britannica Online

The Britannica Online has unveiled a new look and has included new content. Lina/Beth, could you work on a news item that highlights some of the new features, similarly to the other databases entries you have done?

The link for the new site is:

Please post comments about your progress.

Thanks. ~CJ
