Questions: 5
Issues: 2 calls indicating trouble logging in remotely to databases. The issue in both cases was expiry of privileges (both expired Aug. 31, 2007). Second caller indicated that she was a full time student and had paid all her fees. She appeared also to have 5 checkouts. I indicated that I was authorized only to clear PINs and change email addresses and referred both patrons to circulation.
The second issue is in editing Refworks Vendor info. Changes need to be made to the Importing instructions, and I don't know how to do that.
A fairly quiet night. Worked on the RefWorks project, and, I think, finished it (although I can see where vendors, like LexisNexis, could be added to the Vendor help list and thus extend the project).
I will paste in my notes about changes to RefWorks info here (unless indicated, the changes have been made online to the Exporting info):
I. ISI: yes, looks fine.
II.ABC-Clio: Changes:
2. Choose "Check to add to Personal List"
5. changed "Tagged Entry" to "Personal List"
6. Check "Canada" under "Refworks"
7. Click "Export Records" at top right or "Send" at bottom of page.
8. On next screen click ["Export to RefWorks Canadian Network"]
III.Elsevier: Problematic!
Changes:
Geobase, International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioural Sciences, Elsevier: Followed steps but Import was repeatedly aborted when clicked on Export to Refworks.
Changes entered:
Choose "RIS Format" in "Export Format" (and NOT export to Refworks). This allows option to save or open a text file.
IMPORTANT: There is NO option to choose "Elsevier" as the Import Filter/Data Source—only "Science Direct (RIS Format). Select either Science Direct Navigator or Multiple Databases in Database box. I did not know where to go to edit Import instructions, so this needs to be looked at.
IV. Ebscohost:
Changes:
Removed information about clicking save and choosing bibliographic manager. Check items to be exported from Folder has items. Choose Export, rather than Save. Choose Direct Export to Refworks and THEN Save.
V. ISI: looks fine.
VI: CSA: looks fine.
VII: PubMed:
Export Instructions are mostly fine. Added indication that text file should be selected (CTRL A) then copied.
Import Instructions need to be changed:
Choose "NLM Pubmed" in "Import Filter/Data Source". There is no simple "Pubmed," which is confusing. (You can also choose "University of Winnipeg" here and then "Pubmed" in the Database section.)
If "NLM Pubmed" entered in Import Filter/Data Source, then "Pubmed" comes up automatically in "Database."
Then paste contents.
VIII: ARTFL: not sure what to do with this one.
IX: WebSPIRS: again, not sure what to do with this.
X. Sage Journals Online:
Major changes. Import into Refworks is now automatic. See website for changes.
XI: BioOne:
Problem: Export Instructions are correct, but automatic import was tagged previously and it is not automatic.
Import instructions must be updated:
After saving or copying the contents of the text file, open reference, import, and choose "Refworks Tagged Format" for Import filter/Data Source. There is NO option to choose "BioOne" as Import Filter (as the Import instructions indicate: I don't know how to get to these instructions). "Tagged Format" comes up for "Database." Import.
XII: CAS:
Couldn't get into SciFinder Scholar. Clicking on the link just led to the info page about the database. The link within that page simply led back to the same page. Couldn't check it. The SciFinder Scholar Tutorial link was a dud, too. Got to some product info about SciFinder Scholar from the CAS page but couldn't get into the database.
CAS appears twice on the Add/Edit Vendor Help Pages. Not sure what this means. One says "yes" in the "Actice" column, and one says "no."
XIII: Gale:
Literary Index and Contemporary Authors did not seem to have any facility for marking records. They don't conform to the usual Gale interface. Should Refworks instructions be removed here? I can't figure out how to export.
Otherwise, Gale in CPI-Q now exports automatically to Refworks.
The RefWorks Export to Databases list has "Biography and Genealogy Master Index" as a Gale database, but we don't appear to have it.
XIV: Need Vendor Help for Lexis Nexis (eg. Academic Universe Database): the "i" info window currently lists its vendor as "other."
That's about it. Happy Thanksgiving!
